Meeting at Larnaca airport and flight to Constantinople via Athens. Upon arrival, we transfer to the Ecumenical Patriarchate, where we will see the Closed Gate, the martyrdom site of Patriarch Gregory V, and venerate in the Patriarchal Church of St. George, admiring the golden old wooden iconostasis, the rare icon of the Virgin Panmakaristos, and other holy relics.
We stroll through Fener to see the Great School of the Nation, then visit the Church of Panagia Baloukliotissa, known for the legend of the monk and the fish during the Fall of the City.
Following the Byzantine land walls of Theodosius, we head to the Church of Panagia of Blachernae, where the Akathist Hymn was first chanted.
Next stop: the famous Egyptian (Spice) Bazaar.
Transfer to the hotel, check-in, and free time for the rest of the day.
Overnight in Constantinople.
After breakfast, we explore major Byzantine and Ottoman landmarks.
We start at the Hippodrome, then visit the impressive Blue Mosque with its six minarets, and take a guided tour of the majestic Hagia Sophia.
We continue to the Topkapi Palace, home to the treasures of the Sultans, and visit either the Basilica Cistern or the Aqueduct, one of the city's most stunning sights.
We finish at the Grand Bazaar, with its 4,000 colorful shops.
Return to the hotel in the afternoon.
In the evening, we suggest an optional Bosphorus cruise.
Overnight in Constantinople.
After breakfast, we depart for Çanakkale (Dardanelles), a region that lies on both European and Asian continents.
We travel along the Sea of Marmara, passing by several historical Greek towns.
Arrival and hotel check-in.
After dinner, we suggest a walk along the promenade to see the Trojan Horse used in the film Troy.
Overnight in Çanakkale.
Breakfast and ferry to the historic island of Imbros (Gökçeada), one of the two Aegean islands belonging to Turkey (along with Tenedos).
Arrival at the port of Agios Kyrikos and island tour:
We visit Schinoudi, Agriadia, Agioi Theodoroi (the most developed village, birthplace of the Patriarch), the Castle, the small port, and the capital Panagia.
In the afternoon, ferry back to Kabatepe, and return to Çanakkale for a short city tour.
Dinner and overnight in Çanakkale.
After breakfast, we visit the archaeological site of Troy, where the Trojan War took place, and relive the epic of the Iliad with heroes like Achilles, Hector, Agamemnon, and Menelaus.
We continue to Moschonisia and visit the main island, connected to Ayvalik by a narrow bridge.
Walk through the quaint alleys and visit the Church of the Archangels.
Next stop: the old town of Ayvalik, with its Greek mansions and narrow streets.
We visit the Church of St. George, which dates back to 1790 and now functions as a mosque (since 1922), but retains its stunning wooden iconostasis.
Free time on the seafront.
We then head to Pergamon for a guided tour of its archaeological site.
After lunch, we continue to Smyrna (Izmir), arriving in the late afternoon.
Hotel check-in and dinner.
Evening walk along the seafront promenade is highly recommended.
Overnight in Smyrna.
Breakfast and departure to Ancient Ephesus, home to remarkably preserved monuments.
During our guided tour, we will see the Arcadian Way, the Hellenistic Theater, Nymphaeum, Stadium, and the Library of Celsus.
Next, we visit the Greek village of Kirkindje (mentioned by Dido Sotiriou in "Farewell Anatolia").
Stop for lunch and enjoy free time in the cosmopolitan seaside resort of Kusadasi.
Return to Smyrna, driving along the seafront boulevard, lined with charming façades reflecting the Greek presence of the past.
Dinner and overnight in Smyrna.
After breakfast, we explore Smyrna and enjoy free time in the bustling bazaar.
Early afternoon, we head to Kordelio, once a thriving suburb in 1922 with its own vibrant waterfront and social life.
Free time for lunch and sightseeing—try the famous dessert "künefe".
Then, we transfer to Izmir Airport for our return flight to Larnaca via Athens.
