Meeting at Larnaca Airport and flight to Istanbul via Athens. Arrival, meeting with our local Greek-speaking guide, and departure by coach. After crossing the Bosphorus Bridge and passing through ancient Nicomedia, we arrive in riverside Adapazari in the afternoon. Hotel check-in and rest. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, departure for Samsun, passing through the lush green Bolu (ancient Bithynion) and the historic city of Merzifon. With intermediate stops, we arrive in the afternoon in Samsun (ancient Amisos). We tour the old Greek quarter, once home to four Greek schools and 20th-century Greek mansions. Hotel check-in. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we continue along the Black Sea coast. We pass through ancient Themiskyra (Tarsamba), the mythological homeland of the Amazons, then through Unye, Fatsa, and reach Ordu (ancient Cotyora), where we’ll see the Cathedral of the Presentation. Continuing to Giresun, famous for cherries and hazelnuts, we visit the Church of St. Nicholas, now a museum, and beautiful restored mansions. We continue via Tripoli and Platana to arrive in Trabzon. Hotel check-in. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we explore Trabzon. We visit Hagia Sophia (now a mosque), renowned for its architecture and frescoes, the Frontistirion (Greek College), the Kapagiannidis mansion (now Atatürk Pavilion), the Church of Panagia Chrysokephalos (former Metropolis), and buildings of historical Greek banks. Optional visit to Boztepe Hill for panoramic city views and to the Theoskepastos Monastery. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we head to Mt. Melá to visit the Monastery of Panagia Soumela. We follow the path of monks Barnabas and Sophronios to the sacred cave where the icon of the Virgin was revealed. The monastery, a spiritual center of the Pontic Greeks, was richly endowed and fortified. Optional visit to the nearby villages of Maçka to try the famous rice pudding of Hapsiköy. Free time in Trabzon's market. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we begin our return. Passing through Platana (ancient Hermonassa), Giresun, and Ordu, we arrive in Amasya. Hotel check-in. Dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, we tour Amasya – birthplace of Strabo and capital of the Mithridatic Kingdom of Pontus. We visit the Ataturk Monument, site of the 1921 executions of 174 leading Pontic Greeks. Across the Iris River, we view the rock-carved royal tombs of the Mithridatic kings, the city’s castle, and the Greek and Armenian quarters. We then depart for Istanbul. Late evening arrival and hotel check-in. Overnight stay.
After breakfast, we tour Istanbul: visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the Hippodrome, Hagia Sophia, the Basilica Cistern, and enjoy free time at the Grand Bazaar. Transfer to Istanbul Airport for the return flight to Larnaca via Athens, full of unforgettable experiences.
